How to brew coffee using a French Press | The perfect French Press (cafetiere) recipe

Simple, elegant, foolproof and great for having with a little crowd.

The French Press is possibly the easiest way to make good and foolproof coffee.  Get some coffee, add water and press your life away - that's all there is to it.

French Press Cafetiere Brew Guides and Instructions

The basics:

Yield: 2 cups
30g of coarsely ground or pre-ground filter coffee
350g/ml of approximately 94˚C water
Overall Brew Time 4:00 minutes

You’ll need:

2-cup French Press
Spoon for stirring

Optional but useful:

Digital scales

Let’s do it

1. Add the coffee

Adding ground coffee to a French Press

Grind your coffee, or use pre-ground coffee and measure out 30 grams.  Add it to the French Press.  We're using a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio here, so if you're using a bigger French Press, adjust your ratios accordingly.

2. The first pour

Adding hot water to a French Press Cafetiere

Pour in roughly twice the amount of water than you have coffee.  For example if you have 30 grams of coffee you'll need 60 grams of water.

3. Stir and bloom

Give the coffee a quick stir and let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds.

4. Second pour

Adding water to French Press

Add the remainder of the water and put the lid on.  Don't plunge now!  Wait for the full four minutes before plunging.  Don't rush it and ruin it!

5. Plunge and pour

Press the plunger down, firmly and consistently, but don't force it.  Serve immediately - don't let it sit and stew, it will carry on brewing and become all gnarly and over-extracted.  Enjoy!
